국민학교 때 유리병에 반딧불을 잡아 넣고 그 불빛으로 책을 읽어본 적이 있다. 학교에서 배운 형설지공(螢雪之功)을 흉내 내본 것이었다. 지금 생각해보면 그런 기질이 평생 연구원을 하게 만든 것 같다. 어제 밤에 금년 들어 처음으로 반딧불을 보았다. 옛 친구를 만난 만큼이나 반가웠으니 늙으면 애가 된다는 말이 여기에도 해당되는 듯싶다. 자연의 질서, 어찌 보면 그게 무언의 약속이라는 생각이 든다. 언제 다시 오겠다는 언질은 없었지만 매년 그 때가 되면 기다려지는 것들이 계절에 따라 있다. 어제 밤에 만난 반딧불도 그 중 하나이다.
