프로젝트개요

지난2003년청계천복원사업추진당시부터기획된청계천조형물프로젝트는서울시립미술관의자문을거쳐추진되었으며공공장소에예술품을설치하는공공미술이니만큼시민들에게보다양질의작푼을보다쉽게체험하기위해대중성과예술성을두로검중받은작가우레데버그와그의부인브로젠의공동작업작품을설치하였다한다.

이작품은외부는탑처럼위로상승하는나선형의다슬기모양으로다이나믹하고수직적인느낌을연출하여복개된청계천의샘솟는모양과도시서울의발전을상징하며내부는푸른색과붉은색의리본형태로DNA의나선형구조를연상시키면서자연과인간의결합을상징하고있다.또한기존의박에서바라보기만했던공공미술작품과는달리내부를직접확인할수잇는터넬구조로외부에서는입구를통해내부를볼수있도록설계되었다.

조형물의자료는구리나돌등의단일한자료가아니라스테인레스스틸알루미늄섬유강화프라스틱등의혼합매체를사영하여내부는부드럽고평면적으로외부는거친표면으로대조를이루었다.

ThisprojectwasaJointprojectofworld-famousartistClaesOldenberg(76)andCoosjevanBruggenofoneyearandcosted3million400thousanddollars,ofwhich600thousanddollarswenttothewriter.AllexpenseswerecoverdbyKoreanTelephoneCommunicationauthority.


ItwaspromotedbySFAC(SeoulFoundationforartandCulture)theCheonggyecheonsculpture“Spring”asamonumentsignifyingthesymbolicsiteofenvironmentalrestorationandinternationalcultureandartscenter.“Spring”wassolicitedbySFACfromtheartistClaesOldenbergandhiswife,CoosjevanBruggen,tobemadeinaboutayearsincethetimeofOctober2005.Itwasmadethroughcomplicatedandpreciseproductionprocess;installedinearlySeptember“Spring”symbolizesthefinalcompletionofCheonggyecheonrestoration.ItscompletionwillbeachancetopromoteSeoulasacenterofcultureandarts,andCheonggyecheonastheinternationallyrarebiologicalstreaminthemiddleofacity.AlongwithrenownedartistsOldenbergandBruggen’sparticipation,itisexpectedtheprestigeofsuchaprojectwillincreaseevenmore.


“Spring”’souteriorclimbsinaspirallikeapagoda,anditsdynamicandperpendicularfeelingsymbolizesthefountainsofrestoredCheonggyecheonanddevelopmentofSeoul.Theinteriorisshapedlikearedribbon,andremindsoneofthespiralsofDNAs,whichmakesonethinkoftheunionofnatureandman,orthetechnologicallyadvancedSeoul,whereresearchisbeingdonealldayandnight.

Inaddition,Oldenberg’sartisnotjustobservablefromoutsidelikeotherpublicdisplaysofart,butcanbeseenfrominsidealso.Sinceitisshapedlikeatunnel,onecanlookintotheartwork.Atnight,thesculpturelightsupfrominside,givingaudiencessomethingnewtolookat.“

BorninGroningen,theNetherlands,onJune6,1942,CoosjevanBruggenreceivedamaster’sdegreeinarthistoryfromtheUniversityofGroningen.From1967to1971sheworkedinthecuratorialdepartmentoftheStedelijkMuseuminAmsterdamandwasco-editorofthecatalogueofSonsbeek71,anexhibitionofcontemporarysculptureheldinParkSonsbeek,Arnhem,andothersitesthroughouttheNetherlands.VanBruggenwasamemberoftheselectioncommitteeforDocumenta7inKassel,Germany(1982);acontributortoArtforum(1983-88);andSeniorCriticintheDepartmentofSculptureatYaleUniversitySchoolofArt(1996-97).ShehasalsoauthoredbooksonClaesOldenburg’searlyworkandonJohnBaldessari,HanneDarboven,BruceNauman,andthearchitectFrankO.Gehry,amongothers.VanBruggen’sfirstcollaborationwithClaesOldenburgwasin1976,whenTrowelI,originallyshownatSonsbeek71,wasrebuiltandrelocatedinthesculpturegardenoftheKr?ler-M?lerMuseuminOtterlo,theNetherlands.In1978vanBruggenmovedtoNewYork,whereshecontinuedtoworkwithOldenburgtoestablishdirectcontactwithawideraudiencebycreatinglarge-scale,site-specificworksinurbansettings.Theircollaborationhasextendedtosmaller-scaleparkandgardensculpturesaswellastoindoorinstallations.

ClaesOldenburgwasbornJanuary28,1929,inStockholm,Sweden,butspentmostofhischildhoodintheUnitedStates.AfterstudiesatYaleUniversityandtheArtInstituteofChicago,hemovedtoNewYorkCityin1956,whereheestablishedhimselfintheearly1960swithaseriesofinstallationsandperformancesinfluencedbyhissurroundingsontheLowerEastSide.

Oldenburg’sinitialinterestinconstructingenvironmentssuchasTheStreet(1960),TheStore(1961),andBedroomEnsemble(1963)soonevolvedintoaconcentrationonsinglesculptures.Usingordinary,everydayobjectsashisformofexpression,hewentontodevelop"soft"sculptureandfantasticproposalsforcivicmonuments.In1969,OldenburgtookupfabricationonalargescalewithLipstick(Ascending)onCaterpillarTracks,whichbecameacontroversialfocusforstudentprotestwhenitwasinstalledontheYalecampus,followedin1976byClothespinfordowntownPhiladelphia.Since1976hehasworkedinpartnershipwithCoosjevanBruggen.TogethertheyhaveexecutedoverfortyLarge-ScaleProjects,whichhavebeeninsertedintovariousurbansurroundingsinEurope,Asia,andtheUnitedStates.Theirmostrecentworkisthe144-foot-long,64-foot-highCupid’sSpanforRinconParkontheEmbarcaderoinSanFrancisco.
