BorntoaLazfamilylivinginthegreenvillageofHopa,Artvininthemostnorth-easterncoastalpartofTurkey,hespenthischildhoodlisteningtohisverybelovedgrandmother’stalesandoneofhisbestmusicians“YaşarTurna”whomhecalledmymaster.ThefirstinstrumentofKazımwasthemandolinhisfather,CavitKoyuncu,boughtforhim.However,whenhisuncledwellinginGermanylefthisguitaratArtvin,hehadfoundhismaininstrument.DuetotheinfluencesofFrenchpoetsRimbaudandBaudelaireonKazımduringtheyearsofhighschool,hewouldbecalled“ŞairCeketliÇocuk”(TheBoywithaPoetJacket)amonghisfriendsinspiteofthefactthatheneverbecameapoet.EnteringthePublicManagementofİstanbulUniversityPoliticalSciencesFacultyin1989,hewenttoİstanbul,butattheendoffirstyearhelefttheschoolthinkingthathewouldn’tbeappointedasaheadofficialofadistrictevenwhenhegraduated.Fromthenon,hestartedtoworkinÇağdaşSanatAtölyesiandcomposed

KoyuncurecordedsongsinanumberoflanguagesspokenalongthenortheasternBlackSeacoastofTurkey,aswellasthelanguageofLaz.HewasthefounderandsingerofZuğaşiBerepe("TheChildrenoftheSea"),afolkrockgroupfoundedin1993.Followingthegroup’sbreak-upin2000,Koyuncuwentontorecordtwosoloalbums,Viya!in2001andHaydein2004,whichprovedtobepopularacrossTurkeyandalsoinGeorgia.

Hediedduringtreatmentforlungcancerin2005.AlthoughstronglydeniedbyHealthMinisterRecepAkdag,itispopularlythoughtthattheChernobyldisasterwasthecauseofKoyuncu’scancer,asentimentsharedbymanylocalsonTurkey’sBlackSeacoast.

AlthoughheprimarilysanginTurkish,heismostfamousforhavingsunginLazuri.HisalbumsalsocontainseveralsongsinArmenian,Homshetsi,GeorgianandMegrelian.
