어제인가 미국인 모녀 사기사건 뉴스가 떴다. 뭔가 집히는 게 있어 읽어 보았더니 생각했던 바 그거였다. 부산에 사는 어떤 사람에게 이메일로 거액의 유산을 미끼로 해 돈을 사기쳤다는 내용이다. 120억의 유산이라면 큰 돈이다. 메시지 내용을 안 봐도 알겠다. 그 돈을 인출해서 나누자는 것이다. 돈을 나누어 가질 그럴듯한 이유를 댈 것이다.

예컨대 유산을 남긴 사람의 이름을 거들먹거리면서 상대방의 이름이 유사한 점을 들어 상속의 과정을 설명한다. 영어를 잘 모르는 사람이라도 일단 미국사람, 그것도 모녀라는 점에서 호기심을 갖고 그 메시지를 대하면서 사기에 말려들게 된다. 그 뉴스에 따르면, 사기의 과정은 상당 부분 진행된 것으로 보인다. 9천만원이라는 돈이 그 과정에서 사기당했고, 또 그 모녀가 한국으로 들어왔다는 점에서도 그렇다. 그러다 막판에 들통이 난 사례다.

짐작키로 그 미국인 모녀가 이메일로 접근을 했다는데, 아마도 그 단초는 페이스북이 아니었던가 싶다. 페이스북에서 그런 메시지를 종종 외국인들로부터 받게 된다. 일단 페이스북으로 접촉을 하고는 그 다음 단계는 이메일이다. 사기를 치기위한 보다 구체적인 내용의 긴 사연을 이메일을 통해 보낸다. 사기치는 사람들의 면면도 다양하다.

개인적으로 나도 이런 경우를 몇번 겪었다. 어떤 미국인은 군장성이다. 아프가니스탄 주둔 미국인 장성 행세를 하고 있다. 페이스북 프로필 사진도 미군장성 복장 차림이다. 그 미군장성은 백만달러의 돈이 있는데, 한국에서 부동산 등의 투자처를 찾고있다면서 나더러 좋은 아이템을 좀 알려달라고 했다. 두어 번 메일을 주고 받으면서 나의 개인은행구좌를 알려달라기에 미심쩍어서 끊었더니 그 후 몇번 집요하게 연락을 보내다가는 자진해 물러났다.

암투병으로 시한부 삶을 살고있다는 어떤 여자도 있었고, 런던에 사는 영국인 사기꾼도 있었다. 암투병 중이라는 56세의 여자는 남편이 아프리카에서 유전사업 등을 통해 번 돈을 유산으로 남기고 먼저 죽었다는 것, 유산이 자그마치 5백만 달러라는 것. 그리고 자신은 독실한 크리스천으로 한국에서 그 돈으로 고아 양육이나 미혼모 돌봄 등의 좋은 일을 하고 싶다면서 그 방법을 논의하자는 제의를 해 왔다. 프로필 사진으로는 젊잖고 아름답게 생긴 여자다. 이 여자 또한 은행계좌 번호를 요구하길래 끊었다.

앤서니 볼드윈이라는 변호사는 오일 브로커인 자신의 고객이 2004년 인도네시아 쯔나미 사태 때 죽었는데, 1천5백만불이 예치된 구좌를 자신에 남겼다는 것. 그걸 인출해 나눠 갖자는 것인데, 나에게 접근한 것은 내 이름의 끝자(last name)이 나와 같다는 것이다. 서양 사람이 ‘영철’이라는 이름을 쓴다? 말이 안 되지 않은가. 이 양반 또한 몇 차례 좀 이상하다는 점을 집요하게 파고 들었더니 제풀에 꺾어져 연락을 끊었다. 이들이 페이스북에서 일단 접촉을 하다 메일로 연락을 나누자며 하는 말이 있다.

“I will send you confidential details as soon as possible.” 이다. ‘confidentital details’라는 거, 당연히 돈 얘기일 것이다.외국의 이런 사람들이 이처럼 이런 행태로 연락을 취해 온다는 게 비단 나 뿐만이 아닐 것이라는 것은 이번 미국인 모녀 사기사건으로 입증된 것인데, 이들이 사기를 칠 상대를 파악한 것은 페이스북을 통해서다. 그러니 온라인인 페이스북에서의 신상 관리에 신경을 써야할 것이라는 생각이다.

아래는 몇몇 이메일 편지 내용 중의 일부다.

Having known my condition I decided to donate this fund to church or better still a Christian individual that will utilize this money the way I am going to instruct here in.
