    "Thefloodwaterhasreachedtheinnercity,"itsaidinastatement,

    puttingtheexpectedvolumeofwaterat1.2billioncubicmetres.

    Thegovernmenthasorderedafive-dayholidayfromThursdayfor21provincesincludingBangkok,

    toallowthecity’sresidentstopreparefortheinundationorleave.

    "IwouldliketoaskBangkokpeoplewhoarealreadyaffectedorcouldbeaffectedsoonto

    considerevacuatingtootherplaces,"saidThongthongChantarangsu,spokesmanfor

    thecountry’sFloodReliefOperationsCentre(FROC).

    "Foodanddeliverieswillbecomemoredifficult,"headded.FROCsaid

    itwasworkingonprovidingextrasheltersacrossthecityof12millionpeople.

    BangkokgovernorSukhumbhandParibatrasaidthatalargeamountofwater

    "willgettoBangkoktonight",afterPrimeMinisterYingluckShinawatrasaid

    floodbarriersmightnotbeabletoholdbackthedeluge.

    DuringtheholidayGovernmentofficeswillbeclosedandauthoritieshaveurgedpublic

    andprivatecompaniestoallowtheirstaffthetimeoff,

    butthecentralbanksaidfinancialmarketsandbankswouldnotshut.

    PublicschoolsinBangkok,currentlyonholiday,arenotexpectedtoreopenuntilNovember15,

    andseveralinternationalschoolshavealsodelayedthereturnofpupils.

    Morethan600inmates,includingsomeondeathrow,weremovedonWednesdayfromthenotorious

    BangKwangprisonontheChaoPhrayariverbank–betterknownasthe"BangkokHilton".

    WorkersatDusitZoo,alsonearthewaterway,alsobegantoevacuatesomeofitsresidents

    includingspotteddeerandantelopes,whilestructureswereprovidedforlionstoclimbuptosafety.

    Addingtothedelugedkingdom’swoesarefearsofcrocodilesontheloosefromfloodedfarms

    anotherthreewerecapturedWednesdayinNonthaburiprovince,northofthecapital.

    "Theyarebetween1.7and1.8metres(fiveandahalfandsixfeet)long,"

    anofficialfromthefisheriesdepartmenttoldAFP,adding

    thattheyknewofnoattacksonhumansbytheescapedreptiles,

    whosenumbersremainunclear.

    Thecountry’sworstfloodingcrisisindecadeshasbeenplagued

    bycontradictoryinformationfromnationalandlocalauthorities,

    confusingBangkokresidentswhohavebeenbracingfortheonslaughtofwaterfordays.

    YinglucksaidonWednesdayshewas"fiftypercentconfident

    thattheinnerzoneofBangkokwillnotbecompletelyflooded,"toningdowncomments

    fromadaybeforewhenshesaidfloodingincentralBangkokwas"highlylikely".

    Shesaida"worst-casescenario"wouldseepartsofthelow-lyingcityinundated

    by"morethanonemetre"ofwater.

    "Initially,thefloodsinBangkokwilllastfortwoweekstoonemonth,"sheadded.

    Manysupermarketswererunninglowonessentialitemssuchasbottledwaterandeggs

    asresidentsstockedupongoodsaheadoftheexpecteddeluge,

    andthepremieradvisedpeopletoboiltapwaterbeforeconsumingit.

    Morethan370peoplehavebeenkilledinthethree-monthfloodcrisiscaused

    byunusuallyheavymonsoonrains,damagingthehomesofmillionsofpeople

    andforcingtensofthousandsintoevacuationcentres.

    Bangkok’smaininternationalairport,Suvarnabhumi,isoperatingasnormal

    butthedomesticDonMueangairportinthenorthofthecitysuspendedflightson

    TuesdayuntilNovember1,afterwatersstartedseepingontotherunways.

    About4,000floodevacueeswhohadfoundrefugeatadisusedterminalon

    thecompoundwerebeingmovedtoothershelters.

    ThedisasterisexpectedtoshavearoundonepercentoffThailand’seconomicgrowthin2011

    accordingtothegovernment,whichonTuesdayannouncedaraftofmeasures

    tohelpflood-affectedbusinessesinanbidtoreassureinvestors.

    Proposalstoboostinvestorconfidenceincludeabout$10billioninsoftloansandtaxwaivers.
