‘머그샷’이란 이름, 생년월일, 체중 등이 적힌 판을 들고(hold a placard with name, date of birth, weight and so on) 키 측정자 옆에서 찍는 식별용 얼굴 사진을 말한다. 얼굴 전면과 측면 사진(front and profile shots)을 촬영한다. ‘머그샷’은 구속된 개인의 사진기록(a photographic record of an arrested individual) 보관을 위해 찍어두는 초상 사진(a photographic portrait)을 일컫는 police photograph의 속어(an informal term)다.
17~18세기에 머그잔들을 만화처럼 희화화된 사람 얼굴로 장식하는(decorate them with cartoonishly-drawn human faces) 것이 유행했는데, 그때부터 머그가 추한 얼굴의 동의어(a synonym for an ugly face)로 사용된 것으로 추정된다. 지금도 결코 잘생기지 않은 얼굴을 묘사하는 데(describe a less-than-beautiful face) 쓰인다.
‘머그샷’이라는 용어는 ‘찡그린 얼굴’이란 의미에서 파생된(derive from the ‘grimace’ definition) 것이라는 의견이 많다. 경찰에 구류된 범죄자(offenders in police custody)는 사진을 찍을 때 나중에 다른 사람들이 쉽게 알아보지 못하게끔(make them less easily identifiable) 얼굴 형태나 용모를 달리 보이게 하려고(in order to change the shape or features of their faces) 일부러 얼굴을 찡그리는 경우가 많은 데, 여기서 유래했다는 것이다.
mug는 누군가를 공격해 돈을 강탈한다(assault someone and rob them of money)는 ‘강도짓 하다’ 의미의 동사로도 사용된다. 명사로는 대개 mugging으로 쓴다. 이것 역시 폭행·강도 범죄의 범인(the perpetrator of the assault and robbery crime)을 ‘추악한 얼굴의 범죄자(an ugly-faced criminal)’, 즉 mug로 지칭하면서 파생된 의미이다.
