LCC맏형제주항공…기종제트화에아깝게처분한Q400들
저비용항공사시승의두번째노선은제주항공의방콕노선이다.제주항공은우리나라저비용항공사의1세대이다.비록한성항공에일년늦은2005년에출발하였지만한성항공이중도에주저앉는바람에현재는우리나라LCC중에서가장오랜역사를갖고있다.제주항공은초기에프로펠러기종인캐나다봄바르디아의Q400을도입하였다.한성항공이프랑스의ATR72기중고를도입했지만제주항공은재벌그룹이세운회사답게모두새비행기를도입하였다.그러나프로펠러기종에대한막연한불신과사소한기체고장과사고에도민감한반응을보인탓에Q400기의새기체냄새가가시기도전에모두처분하고보유기종의제트화에나서게되었다.

사실개인적인경험에의하면제주항공의Q400보다는한성항공이도입했던ATR72가더호감이갔던기종이다.두기종모두유럽의군소도시와태국과미얀마를여행하면서여러번탑승했던기종인데ATR72가기내공간이약간넓은편이다.특히Q400은워낙동체직경이짧아객실바닥의폭이좁아서창가쪽에앉은승객은창가쪽다리를편히뻗을공간이없어불편했던기억이난다.한성항공의ATR72도초기에탑승했던경험이있는데첫눈에너무중고기종이란티를씻을수없었기때문에단명하지않았을까생각된다.
제주항공보유기와노선
제주항공이보유기제트화에나서2008년에처음으로도입한제트여객기는B737-800이다.에어부산이보유하고있던B737-500과B737-400은아시아나항공이1990년중반에도입한B737Classic으로분류되는구형모델이지만B737-800은B737Classic의신형모델인B737NG(NextGeneration)시리즈중의하나로대한항공도단일통로여객기는모두B737NG기종을보유하고있다.제주항공이도입한B737-800은인도의스파이스제트항공에서사용하던8-9년된구형인데이때부터에어부산을제외한우리나라저비용항공사들은뒤따라서10년정도의기령을가진중고B737NG기종을선택하여마치우리나라LCC의표준기종이되다시피하였다.아마도항공사끼리기종시비에휘말리지않으려고그런것은아닐까하는생각이든다.

제주항공홈페이지의예약시스템을보면다른항공사와달리국제선이우선이다.보통다른항공사들은국내선과국제선의선택단추가국내선이왼쪽에있으며우선적으로표시되는데제주항공은국제선의위치가왼쪽이고국제선표시가우선이다.그만큼제주항공이국제선을중시한다는뜻일까?제주항공의예약시스템은에어부산과비슷한데전형적인LCC스타일은아니다.국내선은편도요금기준이지만국제선은일반항공사와마찬가지로항공권의유효기간에따른왕복요금을기준으로하고있다.제주항공은국내출발편만아니라외국출발항공편도인터넷으로판매하고있다.일본과홍콩출발은일본어와영문페이지로예약시스템을갖추었지만태국어사이트는없다.그러나승무원의말에의하면겨울철에한국을찾는태국관광객들이많다고하니아마태국에서는여행사를통해서만항공권을판매하는것같다.부산발방콕행제주항공은434,100원.대한항공(65만원선)과타이항공(55만원)보다싸다.이요금을얻으려면일찌기예약해야하는등쉽지않지만다음단계까지이어져도논스톱경쟁편인타이항공이나대한항공보다경쟁력있다.

예정시간보다약30분늦게탑승이시작되었는데보딩브릿지로직접탑승하지않고버스로국내선주기장까지이동하였다.항공기가국제선과국내선을번갈아운항하게되면기체를해당터미날로이동하지않고승객들을버스로수송한다.이날탑승할기체는B737-800,등록번호HL7780.인도의스파이스제트항공에서사용하던것이다.좌석은전형적인LCC표준의189석.대한항공이보유하고있는B737NG를제외하고는국내모든LCC들이보유한B737-800이189석이다.

제주항공의기내서비스도에어부산과마찬가지로어정쩡한LCC스타일이다.LCC를내세우는항공사인만큼대한항공이나타이항공에는기내식수준에서미치지못한다.그러나주류서비스가없고기내식이ColdMeal,크로와상햄샌드위치와삼각김밥이란것을제외하면일반항공사와마찬가지다.

방콕시내호텔에서하루종일잠만잤다.자정이넘은새벽에체크인하고같은날오후늦게체크아웃을하니만하루도되지않지만호텔숙박카운트는이틀이된다.체크아웃을오후6시에하는조건으로추가하루는50%를내고그비용으로고급식당에서혼자저녁식사를하고공항으로일찍나갔다.방콕수완나붐공항의제주항공카운터는출국장거의끝인Risland에있다.멀리제주항공의모델인빅뱅의실물크기의사진간판이보이는데정말실물같다.이날자정이지나제주항공박콕발인천행항공편과부산행항공편이비슷하게출발한다.역시승객들중에는단체관광객들이많은데거의한국인승객으로보인다.

방콕수완나붐공항은나한테가장친숙한외국공항중의하나인데2007년개항이래꾸준히구설수에오르고있다.불과5년사이에출국심사과정이벌써세번째로바뀌었다.전에는각콩코스로진입하는입구에서보안검색을하였지만인천공항처럼중앙집중식으로변경하였는데원래보안검색자리가아닌메인터미날에서콩코스로진입하는길목에보안검색대를설치하여무척붐볐다.이런폐단때문인지이번에는메인터미날예전에출국수속을하던자리의윗공간에새로운메자닌층을만들어승객들을에스칼레이터로위로올려보내보안검색을먼저받게하고다시내려와서출국심사를하도록되어승객들의동선이길어지게되었다.

귀국길,5년만에만난B737기체
귀국편에탑승할기종도B737-800,등록번호HL7779.노트북에보관된데이터베이스를찾아족보를따져보니2007년인도여행때만났던스파이스제트항공의VT-SPC바로그기체다.별것도아닌인연인데확인하고나니무척반갑다.기내에빈좌석은거의보이지않는다.옆좌석에앉은젊은신혼부부로보이는청년은보딩이한참진행되고있는데목마르다고물달라고보챈다.외국항공사같으면이륙후까지기다리라고하겠건만착한승무원이보딩하는승객들을비집고주방에서물을가져다준다.

이륙후기내식으로빵과머핀을담은스낵박스를나누어주는데박스가터질듯한모습이다.빵을담은비닐봉투가기내압력이떨어져서부풀어올랐기때문이다.다섯시간남짓비행끝에부산공항에착륙했다.제주항공HL7779기는국제선청사를지나국내선청사앞의주기장에멈춘다.이기체의다음행선지는국내선으로제주가될것같다.
제주항공의탑승소감은에어부산과큰차이가없다.기내식에서HotMeal이아니라는것과식사시간에좋아하는포도주를마실수없었다는것외에는대한항공이나아시아나항공등일반항공사에뒤질것은없다.그러나내가제주항공에탑승한이유는국내저비용항공사들의실태를직접체험하기위한것을생각하면역시아쉬움은있다.제주항공도역시더걷어야할거품은있기때문이다.
제주항공,국내LCC중가장요금경쟁력이높아….
전체적인제주항공의요금수준을보면노선별로다르지만대한항공이나아시아나항공에비해최저요금수준이약20~30%정도낮은수준으로국내LCC중에서는가장낮은요금을유지하고있다.에어부산의요금경쟁력에실망하였지만제주항공의요금은그런대로LCC답다는느낌을준다.그러나이정도는일본의피치항공과경쟁하고있는인천-오사카노선의경우10%정도높은수준이다.그리고피치항공처럼잊을만하면떠오르는파격적인이벤트가국내LCC에서는볼수없다는것이아쉽기도하다.모든국내항공사가취항하고있는인천-방콕노선의경우14일정도유효한항공권이제주항공과진에어가43만원선으로가장낮고이스타항공은47만원,티웨이는50만원이다.서비스수준이비슷한국내LCC사이에도7만원정도차이가난다.물론방콕노선도여행기간이15일이넘을경우는제주항공이나진에어모두70만원수준으로대한항공이나아시아나항공보다훨씬비싸다.저비용항공사들이왜3개월요금을일반항공사들보다높이책정했는지이해가가지않는다.제주항공의매력적인요금은’JOY운임’이다.출발날짜와도착날짜가지정되어직장에얽매인승객들은이용하기어렵지만시간여유가있으면일반적인최저요금보다10%정도더낮아진다.

제주항공의앞날은…한국형LCC?본격적인LCC?
제주항공은우리나라LCC1세대로보유항공기와가장노선이많은항공사로스스로대한항공과아시아나항공에이은제3의항공사로부르고있다.제주라는지명을사용하고있지만대부분의국제선은인천공항이허브공항이라지역항공사의울타리에서벗어난것은틀림없다.그러나제주항공의출범을지켜본승객들의바램은대한항공과아시아나항공을뒤따르는제3의항공사를기대한것은아니었다.제주항공이국내LCC중에서가장요금경쟁력이높지만그래도아직은외국의저비용항공사에서느끼는수준은아닌것같다.우리나라LCC중에서가장국제선이많은제주항공은일본의피치항공과인천-오사카노선을두고경쟁하고있다.두항공사모두LCC를내세우지만피치항공은기내식음료서비스가없지만제주항공은음료수나간단한삼각김밥등의스낵을제공하고있다.LCC를기대하는승객들은더나은서비스를제공하는항공사보다는더낮은요금을제공하는항공사를원하고있다.제주항공이대한항공과아시아나항공과같은풀서비스로경쟁할것이아니고LCC를내세울것이라면좀더과감하게원가절감에나서항공요금을더욱낮추는것을기대해본다.
