바로내가살고있는아파트단지내에서,남편이자주운동을하던놀이터에서일본사람이목을매고자살했다고한다.옆동에사는사람으로2년째이곳에있었다고하니마주치곤했었을사람이려니…신문에난기사를보니45세의올림푸스인디아의중역인모양인데안타깝고불쌍한마음이많이든다.
우리아파트는편의시설도잘되어있고정원도아름답고잘꾸며져있는데,최근에일본사람들이많이들어와살고있다.요즘들어서특히유치원이나초등생을둔젊은일본인부부들이현저히눈에띄고나홀로살고있는연세가있는일본인도꽤된다.이아파트단지만해도일본인이약50가구정도가살지않나싶다.오전에학교등교시간이되면젊은일본인주부들끼리삼삼오오아파트입구에서수다를떠는광경을보는것은매우흔하다.일본인들은자녀들을거의일본학교에보내는것도특이하다면특이하다.우리집같은층의맞은편과옆집,그리고아랫집도일본인이산다.
우리는곧델리로이사갈예정인데,우리가나가는데로일본인가족이들어올것이다.가구가제공된다고하지만월세가1.5랙이넘으니,우리나라돈으로환산해보면약3백오십만원씩이나된다.
자살한본인이심각한정신적장애를겪고있어서절박한심정으로그길을선택했겠지만,일본에있는가족들은얼마나놀라고비참한심정일것인지상상이안된다.
이사가기직전에접한비극적인소식에매우놀랐다.가끔씩접하는자살사건은그래도먼남의이야기인줄알았는데…가까운곳에서도언제든벌어질수있다는사실도깨달았다.주변에대한배려를다시금돌이켜본다.몇달전서로초코렛과김치를주고받으면서남편과함께인사를나누었던홀로살고있는맞은편일본인에게김치와전을나누면서잘지내시라고안부인사를나누어야겠다.

A45-year-oldJapanesenationalandseniorexecutiveofamulti-nationalcompany,OlympusIndia,allegedlycommittedsuicidebyhanginghimselfinthelawnsofupscaleDLFIconcondominium,Sector43,intheweehoursofMonday.ThebodyofdeceasedTsutomiOmairwasfoundhangingfromanironpoleattachedtothefencingwireat9am.Theincidentcametolightinthemorningwhenagardenerwenttothelawnandinformedtheguardsonduty.Inasuicidenotefoundfromhiseighthfloorapartment,Omairwrote,“IamsorryforwhatIhavedone“.Healsoleftbehindseparatemessagesforhisfather,wifeandchildren,allwritteninJapanese.Thoughthepolicecalledatranslator,thecontentofthemessageshasnotbeendisclosed.OfficialssaidthenoteswouldbereadonlyafterhisfamilymembersarrivefromJapan.Thepolice,however,ruledoutfoulplayandsaidprimafacie,itappearedtobeacaseofsuicide.Theexactreason,whichpromptedhimtotaketheextremestep,isstillnotclear.Meanwhile,thevictim’sbodyhasbeensenttoCivilHospitalwhereapost-mortemwillbeconductedtoascertaintheexacttimeofdeath.ThepolicehavealsorecoveredseveralmedicinesfromhisapartmentandsuspectOmairwasprobablyunderdepression.Theapartmentkeyswererecoveredfromthepocketofhistrouser.Hehadprobablylockedtheflatlateinthenightandcomedowntothelawnsafterleavingthesuicidenotesonhisbed.MaheshwarDayal,deputycommissionerofpolice(crime),said,“Apost-mortemwouldbeconductedonlyafterthearrivalofthedeceased’sfamilymembersandafterwegetanodfromtheJapaneseEmbassy.“Headded,“Inoneofthesuicidenotes,Omairhasregrettedhisdecision,whiletheotherthreenotescarrypersonalcontentmeantforfamilymembers.“Apost-mortemwillbeconductedonlyafterthearrivalofthedeceased’sfamilymembersandafterwegetanodfromtheJapaneseEmbassy.
