‘조블’에서도 활동하신 바 있는 조화유님께서 어제(10월 25일) ‘로버트 김’을 바라보는 색다른 시각의 칼럼을 ‘조선닷컴’에 올려네티즌들의 반향을 일으킨 바 있지요. 또 오늘은 한때 ‘로버트 김’ 후원회를 맡았던 또 한 분께서그 글에 반론을 제시했던 것으로 알고 있습니다.
그러나 조화유 선생님께서 조선닷컴에칼럼을게재하기 하루 전 날, 국내 영자지 ‘코리아 헤럴드’에도조화유 선생님과아주 비슷한 톤의외국인 컬럼기사가 한꼭지 실렸었지요.
필자는 현재 경남 김해에서교사로재직하는 분으로 소개되었는데 기사 내용에서 보면그는 영국인으로 알려져 있습니다.‘로버트 김’ 사건을 한국인도 미국인도 아닌, 제 3국인의입장에서바라보며 약간의 ‘독설’도 섞어 문제를 제기하였네요.
한국에서 활동하는 외국인 중에는흔히 한국인의 ‘다이내믹 애국(?)’을 풍자와 유머로 은근슬쩍꼬집곤 하는데, 이분도 그런 여느 외국인 중 한 분으로 이해하면서 일독해 보셔요.

Robert Kim is not a patriotic hero-로버트 김은 로버트김은 애국적 영웅이 아니다-
I and a few colleagues were shocked to notice that on page two of The Korean Herald on Oct. 13 there was a huge article on Robert Kim and his exploits in the United States. The article was written in such a way that it was bias toward Kim and his actions.
Robert Kim when asked by your reporter, "Where does your patriotism lie?" reply given was, "Korean." Now this is the issue that disgusts me more than anything else. Kim acquired U.S. citizenship through legal means and then swore allegiance to the flag and the republic for which it stands for. In truth Kim abandoned Korea in search of a better life in the United States.
Your reporter prior to this point mentioned the Robert Kim support association, and how the Korean government did not intervene in the sentencing of Kim.
My point is, why should the South Korean government intervene? Kim is a U.S. citizen; he was not contributing to the Korean economy nor was he even a citizen of Korea. If I break the law here in Korea my government (British) isn’t going to help me, especially if I have known and am blatantly committing a crime.
Let’s not forget the question in hand, and that is whether or not Kim is guilty of treachery. For me the issue is crystal clear which is that not only did he abandon Korea to take care of himself but also betrayed the United States. He was privileged to very sensitive information, so what did Kim does? But pass it on to the levels of corruption within the then Korean government.
Both the South Koreans and the Americans have channels for the exchange of intelligence. What gave Kim the right to pass this information on? He was not in the position to pass this information on to any attache. This information, if it were deemed important, would have been passed on to the South Koreans at an appropriate moment.
Since the information that was passed was insignificant it may be viewed as inappropriate to prosecute. However, the prosecution then had to ask themselves, "Is this the first time he has passed on information", and also, "What other countries could he have information to?"
Kim has been invited to speak at universities and on TV shows across South Korea. What is he going to discuss? Patriotism, oh, sorry, I mean espionage.
Those soccer fans from the World Cup should be invited on TV shows to discuss patriotism; they even took away all their trash after the big street parties. The Red Devils are a clear example of patriotism, not Robert Kim.
This is not a simple matter of treachery; the Washington Post reported that Kim was giving the information in order for his brother to receive government kickbacks. Kim claims that the prosecutors had no evidence of this. I don’t know the in’s and out’s of the prosecution, but I do know that U.S. prosecutors are not going to come and call upon Koreans to appear in court.
The Washington Post is a worldwide, award winning, recognized newspaper and would certainly not print such false information if it didn’t have the slightest grain of truth.
The article paints Kim as a patriotic hero, I personally do not think of him as being a hero but as a common criminal who has served his sentence in a minimum security prison. Kim is a very lucky man to still have American citizenship, and also an American passport.
As a foreigner here in Korea, I would like to have regular access to a non-biased newspaper; if I wanted access to this sort of information I could pick up copies of some 1935 German newspapers. -What a wonderful sarcasm ! – ^^

Is It not too sensitive problem to be understood only by the report by mass media?
It was involved with the information which U.S government had to be so sensitive.
Reading between lines is also a way to understand what newspaper say,
Literalism always be deficient to reveal what the truth is.
This might be understood as the way Korean understands
Patriotism in Korean might mean something other than the meaning in English!

변명하자믄 외국인들이 우리나라 Patriotism 에 대해 언급할 때는
긍정적이기보단 부정적인 시각으로 얘기할때가 아주 많은 거 같아요.
월드컵때도 굉장하다고 추켜세워주긴하는데
그게 다 진심으로 하는 말 같진 않았어여.

민족주의 이거 강조하는 민족이라면 옛날에 독일 나치즘… 뭐 파시즘 이런거…
근래 들어 세르비아 네오 나치 이 정도일까요?
아니면 아프리카의 종족주의들…
서구인들 아니 대부분의 국가들이 최소한 2개이상의 인종내지 민족으로 구성되다 보니
국가계약주의적인 관점에서 국가와 개인을 규정합니다.
그러니 그런 그들의 시각에서 한국의 민족주의란게 어떻게 보일까요?
실제로 민족주의라는 개념의 뒤에는
식민지 쟁탈전을 벌이던 영불의 책략이 많이 스며 있습니다.
당시 영불은 어떻게 하든지 터키의 영토를 잠식하고
터키의 세력을 약화시키기 위해서
터키영토내의 민족들을 부추기기 시작합니다.
터키의 영토란게 아시다시피 북아프리카의 리비아부터 유럽의 오스트리아 턱밑까지
아시아는 이란과 이라크등등을 모두 차지 했던 관계로
영국과 프랑스는 반드시 터키내의 민족들에게
민족주의 사상을 고취시켜 독립운동을 하게 한다음
보호해준다느니 어쩌니 하면서 보호령이나 속국 식민지로 만들었거든요.
이런 역사의 뒷면을 알고 또한 민족주의를 나발부는 인간들의 속셈을 알게 되면
민족주의란게 결국 허깨비 노름인 것을 깨닿게 되는데…
젊은 친구들은 배낭 여행다니면서 뭘 보고 느끼는지 모르겠습니다.

국익에 전혀 도움이 안되었던 사건. 반미분자들에 의해 키워진 사건.
한국계 미국인이 되었다면 주류로 성장하는게 우리국익에 도움.
자력의 스파이 활동이었다면 스파이답게 행동 성공했어야…
