변소-소변, 대변-에 해당되는 영어단어

“변소에 가야 해!”에 해당되는 가장 기본적인 한국어 표현은
다음의 것들이 될 것이다.

“오줌(똥) 누러 가야 해!”
“소변(대변) 보러 가야 해!”
“변소 좀 갔다 올께” “화장실 좀 다녀 올께”
“작은 거 보러 가야 해!” “큰 거 보러 가야 해!”

간단하게 말해서,
“오줌, 똥” 같은 단어를 사용하는 사람도 있고…
“소변, 대변, 화장실, 해우소” 같은 한자어로 된 단어를
사용하는 사람도 있을 것이지만…
아마도, 그러한 단어 선택은,
누구에게 말을 하느냐?
또는 자기 앞에 있는 사람이 누구냐?에 따라서,
달라지게 되어 있을 것이다.

그렇다면…
영어에서 사용되는 “변소에 관한 단어들”에는 어떤 것들이 있을까나?
아주 간단하게 나마…
영어에서 쓰여지고 있는 단어들을 대략적으로 짚어 보기로 할까?

“변소에 가야 된다!”는 것에 해당되는 영어 표현:

Go to the bathroom (man’s room, lady’s room).
I need to go to the bathroom.
The call of nature. (a need to use the bathroom.)
[*Bathroom은 ‘화장실, 변소’ 라는 의미고,
Toilet은 변기(便器)를 일컫는 말이다.
따라서, Where is the toilet? (변기가 어디에 있습니까?)는
화장실을 찾는 질문으로는 적합치 않다.]

물론, 좀더 우회적인 표현에 해당되는 다음과 같은 것도 있다.
Powder my nose (This expression is used by women.)
Check (to exam) the rear tire. (urinate in bush.)

그리고,
변소-소변, 대변-에 해당되는 영어 단어들에는,

Number One is urination (pee)- 소변,
Number Two is defecation (poop)- 대변(bowel movement).

Number one (소변), Number two (대변)으로 쓰이게 된
확실한 어원이나 정해진 정답은 없으나…
보편적으로, 다음과 같은 맥락에서 나온 것으로 간주되고 있다.

One minute to pee,
Two minutes to poop.

Well, I don’t know about people, or little kids…
But with dogs, “number 1” is usually the one that happens first.
Gotta wait a few minutes for them to do “number 2.

혹시, 아직도 혼동이 되는 사람을 위하여, 한가지 조언을 첨언하면…
Two의 발음이 Poo(대변)의 발음과 비슷하여,
Number two가 대변(Poo)로 쓰이는 것이라고 기억해 두면 될 것이다.
