터번(Turban)을 쓰고 있는 사람
(Those who wear turbans)

어떤 농부가 Hodja(호드야, 호자)를 찾아와,
편지를 내밀면서, 읽어 주기를 부탁했다.
호드야가
“이 편지는 너무나 악필(惡筆)이라서…
내가 도저히 읽을 수가 없소!” 라고 말했다.

그러자, 농부는 자기를 놀리는 것으로 느꼈는지…
화를 내면서,
“당신은, 배운 사람이 쓰는 터번을 쓰고 있으면서,
편지도 읽을 줄 모른단 말이오!” 라고, 말했다.

그러자, 호드야가,
자기가 쓰고 있던 turban(터번)을 벗어, 그 사람 앞에 놓더니,
“당신은 터번만 쓰고 있으면 배운사람이라고 생각을 하는 모양인데…
그럼 당신이 이 터번을 쓰고서, 읽을 수 있나? 없나? 해보시구료!”
라고 하는 것이었다.

하긴, 그렇지!
Beefeater cap(Doctoral tam)이나 머리에 올려놓는다!고 해서…
그 즉시로, 박사(博士)의 지식이
머릿속에 가득차게 되는 것이 아니듯이 말이다!

A farmer once brought Hodja a letter and asked him to read it to him.
“The handwriting is so bad that I can’t read it!” he said.
The man became angry and said;
“You wear the turban of a learned man and you can’t even read a letter!”
Hodja took off his turban and placed it front of him and said;
“If you think that everyone who wears a turban is a learned man,
Then you put it on yourself and see if you can read it or not.”

A man’s headdress, consisting of a long length of cotton or silk
wound around a cap or the head, worn especially by Muslims and Sikhs.
