몇 년 전미국 플로리다주(州)의 한 부모가 17세 아들과 12세 딸을 상대로 ‘파업’을 벌인(go on strike) 적이 있다.
게을러빠진 아이들에게 진절머리가 났기(be fed up at their bone idle kids) 때문이다. 설거지거리, 쓰레기, 더러운 빨랫감(the dishes, garbage and dirty washing)이 쌓여 가는데도(pile up) 손끝 하나 까딱하지(do a hand’s turn) 않았다. 아무리 애원하고 타일러도(plead and reason with them) 마이동풍이었다(fall on deaf ears).
아버지와 어머니는 집을 나와 앞마당 텐트로 거처를 옮겼다(move into a tent in their front yard). ‘부모 파업 중’이라는 팻말을 꽂아놓고(drive in a picket sign), 모든 집안일에서 손을 놓아버렸다(pull out of all the household chores).
화장실 이용과 샤워를 할 때만 집에 들어갔다(only go in the house to use the restroom and shower).
사랑하는 아이들의 앞날이 걱정돼서(be worried over their beloved children’s future)였다. 최후의 노력(last-ditch effort)이었다. 며칠 뒤 딸아이가 난생 처음 제 옷을 빨아(wash her own clothes for the first time) 입더니 곧이어 아들도 집안일을 거들기(help out around the house) 시작했다.
영국에선 최근 한 고교 교사들이 파업을 벌였다(stage a walk-out). 학생들의 언어적·신체적 폭력에 항의하기 위한(in protest at verbal and physical assaults) 집단 행동이었다.
교사에게 욕을 하고 거칠게 밀치는(swear at teachers and shove them) 것은 이미 다반사가 됐다(happen all too often).
교사들이 정직조치를 받게 하려는(try to get them suspended) 학생들의 악의적 주장 대상이 되기도(be a subject of malicious allegations) 한다. 휴대폰으로 갖가지 영상을 찍었다며 인터넷에 올리겠다고 협박하는(threaten to post the footage on the internet) 학생도 있다.
교사들은 "존경심 결여는 차치하고(let alone the lack of respect) 손찌검까지 하는(put their hands on teachers) 것은 도저히 용납할 수 없다"고(won’t have a bar of it) 격앙된 어조로 말한다(speak in a fiery tone).
급우들이 보는 앞에서 불어 교사의 가슴을 움켜잡고 애무한(grasp and fondle a French teacher’s breasts in front of a class) 학생도 있었다 한다. 교사파업을 손가락질만 할 수도(point a finger at the teachers’ strike) 없는 지경에 이른 지 오래다.
교사는 촛불과 같다(be like a candle). 자신을 태워 다른 이들의 길을 밝힌다(consume themselves to light the way for others). 교정의 촛불들이 흔들리고(be flickering) 있다.
