세계 최고 부자들 중 일부(some of the world’s wealthiest people)가 이달 초 비밀리에(under a cloak of secrecy) 전례 없는 모임을 가졌다(gather in an unprecedented meeting). 내로라 하는 이들 억만장자들의 꿍꿍이속(the underhand scheme of these billionaires)은 무엇이었을까.
공식 일정을 떠나 언론을 피해(be left off their public calendars and hidden from the press) 모인 이들 미국의 부유하고 영향력 있는 인사들의 비밀 회동(a clandestine meeting of the country’s rich and powerful)은 도처의 음모론자들 상상력을 자극하기에 충분(be enough to spark the imaginations of conspiracy theorists everywhere)했다.
그러나 참석자들은 abc방송 인터넷판과의 인터뷰에서 “모임은 100% 자선에 관한 것(be 100 percent about philanthropy)”이었다며 “비밀로 하려 했던 것은 아니다(be not meant to be a secret)”고 밝혔다. 단순히 사적인 모임(just a private meeting)이었을 뿐이라는 얘기다.
한 참석자에 따르면(according to an attendee) 이날 모임의 목적은 어떻게 하면 힘을 합쳐 더 많은 자선사업을 할 수 있을까(how they can join together to do more charitable works) 의논하는 것이었다.
세계 2대 부호인 빌 게이츠와 워런 버핏의 초대를 받은(be invited by the world’s two richest men Bill Gates and Warren Buffett) 이들 억만장자들은 지난 5일 뉴욕시 맨해튼 동쪽의 강 이스트 리버가 내려다 보이는 한 거실의 긴 테이블 주위에 모여(gather around a long table in a private room overlooking the East River) 앉았다.
모든 이들이 이날 모임에 꼭 참석하도록 한(galvanize everyone to participate in the meeting) 주된 동기(the overwhelming reason)는 “있는 사람들이 없는 사람들에게 나눠주자”는 것이었다.
게이츠와 버핏은 영향력 있는 다른 자선가들인 오프라 윈프리, 테드 터너, 뉴욕시장 마이클 블룸버그, 조지 소로스 등과 함께 자리를 했다(be joined by other heavyweight philanthropists Oprah Winfrey, Ted Turner, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and George Soros and others). 이날 참석자들은 지난 1996년 이후 자선사업을 위해 총 700억 달러(약 88조원)를 기부한(donate more than ＄70 billion to charity) 것으로 집계되고 있다.
뉴욕 회동은 맨해튼의과대학 캠퍼스에 있는 록펠러대학 총장의 관저에서 이뤄졌다(be held at the residence of the Rockerfeller University president on the campus of the Manhattan medical school).
모임은 오후 중반에 시작돼 저녁식사를 해가며 5시간 가량 계속(last about five hours, beginning in mid-afternoon and continuing through dinner)됐다. 과거에 개인적으로, 또는 소그룹으로 만난(mee in the past either individually or in smaller groups) 적은 있지만 이렇게 대거 함께 자리를 같이 한 경우는 없었다.
토론은 긴급 구호노력부터 장학금, 미국교육, 세계적 보건 문제에 이르기까지(range from emergency relief effort to scholarship, to U.S. education and to global health) 다양한 주제를 다뤘다.
익명을 요구한 또 다른 참석자(another attendee who asked to remain anonymous)는 자신들의 자선활동에 대한 이야기와 감동을 나누기 위한 친구·동료들의 사적인 모임(a private gathering of friends and colleagues to share their history and excitement about their philanthropy)이었다고 전했다.
하지만 모임 결성 배경의 세부계획(the logistics behind its organization) 등 모임의 상세한 내용에 대해 많은 의문이 남는다(there remain as many questions about the meeting’s details)고 abc방송은 지적한다. 어떻게 세계에서 가장 유명한 인사들(the world’s most public figures)이 언론에서 아무도 모르게 자신들의 스케줄과 이동, 보안을 조정할(coordinate their schedules, travel, and security with no one in media knowing about it) 수 있었느냐는 지적도 있다.
이번 모임은 일반 개인들(private citizens)이 어떻게 하면 경제공황을 저지할(stop the economic panic) 있을 지를 의논하기 위해 JP모건의 서재에서 열렸던 미국의 가장 주요한 금융인들의 1907년 모임을 연상케 하는 것(reminiscent of the 1907 salons of America’s foremost financiers held in the study of J.P. Morgan)이었다.
참석자들은 각각(each of the participants) 현재의 세계경제 상황 아래서(given the global economic climate) 자신들의 자선활동을 가장 잘 운용할 수 있는 방법을 제시하도록 15분간씩 시간이 주어진(be given 15 minutes to propose how to best direct their charity) 것으로 알려졌다.
경제위기로 인해 위축된 자선사업들과 관련해 세계적인 자선활동에 새로운 방식을 제시하기 위해 미국의 톱 자선사업가들이 모였을 것이라는(likely meet to chart a new course for global charity) 얘기다.
그러나 주위에선 모임 자체가 특별하고 정말 드문(be extraordinary and really unusual) 일이라고 입을 모은다. 자선사업에 대해 이야기 하려고 한 방에 모두가 모이는(all be in the same room to talk about philanthropy) 다른 경우는 생각도 해볼 수 없는(can not think of another time) 사건이라고 지적한다.
마이크로소프트의 창업자이자 전 CEO인 게이츠(Gates, the founder and former CEO of Microsoft)는 전 세계의 전염성 질병 근절을 위해 자신의 자선재단이 전념토록 하고(dedicate his foundation to eradicating infectious disease worldwide) 있다.
약 590억 달러 가치를 지니고 있는(be worth of about ＄59 billion) 게이츠는 2002~2006년 37억 달러를 기부했으며, 2007~2008년엔 100억 달러를 기부금으로 냈다. 버핏은 2006년 자신의 재산 상당부분(the bulk of his fortune)인 310억 달러를 게이츠의 자선재단에 기부하겠다고 약속, 실질적으로 하룻밤 사이에 재단의 기부금 규모를 2배로 늘려(double the organization’s endowment virtually overnight) 놓았다.
이번 모임 참석자들의 자선 이해관계는 다르지만(though the charitable interests of the participants differ), 이들에게는 공통적인 것들이 있다(have some things in common). 대부분은(for the most part) 자수성가 형이라는(be all self-made) 것이다. 그들의 기부금은 부모의 재산이 아니라(rather tan their parents’ fortune) 본인의 생애에서 번 돈에서 나온다(come from the money made in their own lifetimes).
또 죽은 뒤에 유산으로 하는 것이 아니라(rather than through bequests after their deaths) 아직 살아있을 때 재산 기부를 약속했다(have committed to giving away their fortunes while still alive)는 점도 공통적이다. 다른 점이 있다면 기부에도 특정 분야가 있다(have a specialty)는 것이다. 게이츠는 세계 보건에, 터너는 환경 분야와 유엔에 초점을 맞추는 식이다.
어쨌든 이번 억만장자 자선사업가들의 뉴욕 회동에 모두를 불러 모은(bring everyone together) 가장 큰 계기는 아이러니컬 하게도 전 세계적인 경제 위기였다.
