얼마 전(a short time ago) 뉴욕필하모닉 관현악단이 공연 도중 연주를 중단해(stop the performance in its tracks) 세계적 화제가 됐었다(become the talk of the world).
휴대폰 벨소리가 관객석 앞줄 좌석에서 울리자(go off from a front row seat for the audience) 지휘자가 화를 내며(see red) 거의 전례 없는 조치로(in an almost unprecedented measure) 연주를 중단시켜(cut the orchestra) 버린 것.
말러의 9번 교향곡(Mahler’s Ninth Symphony) 막바지 가장 감동적인 악절(the final and most moving passage)이 흐르던 중이었다. 벨소리가 쉴 새 없이 울리기 시작하자(begin ringing without cease) 지휘자가 지휘대에서 돌아서더니(turn around on the podium) 신원이 밝혀지지 않은 문제의 관객에게 휴대폰을 끄라고 요구했다(ask the unknown miscreant to turn off the phone).

비슷한 상황이 슬로바키아에서도 벌어졌다. 루카스 크미트라는 비올라 연주자가 독주 공연을 하던(give a solo rendition) 중이었다. 관객들이 음악의 가장 매혹적인 부분에 몰두해 있을(be engrossed in the most captivating passage of music) 때였다.
때마침(as if on cue) 연주가 작품의 가장 조용하게 가라앉는 부분에 도달하는(reach the quietest ebb of the piece) 순간, 관객석에서 휴대폰 벨소리가 울렸다. 크미트는 잠시 연주를 멈췄다(pause for a second). 그러나 그의 반응은 뉴욕필하모닉 지휘자와 달랐다. 으레 있는 일로 받아들이고 침착하게 대처했다(take it in stride).
화를 내는 대신에(rather than get hot under the collar) 벨소리 멜로디를 즉흥적으로 변형시켜 연주하면서 공연을 이어갔다(continue his performance with an improvised version of the ringtone).
