얼마 전 미국 시카고 교외의 한 아파트 빈집털이 사건 현장에서 어항 속 세 마리의 금붕어(three goldfish in a fishbowl)가 죽은 채 발견(be found dead at a burglary scene)됐다.
범행은 10대 3인조 절도범들에 의해 저질러진(be committed by a trio of teenage burglars) 것으로 밝혀졌다. 15~17세인 범인들은 1층에서 발생한 화재로 인해(due to a fire in the first floor) 여러 채의 아파트들이 빈 채 버려져 있다는(be abandoned vacant) 소문을 듣고 빈집을 털기로(rob the empty houses) 했다.
한 아파트의 문을 비집어 열고 침입해(break into an apartment prying open its door) 보석류, 금고, 공기총 등을 훔쳐 달아나려(make off with jewelry, a safe, an air gun and so on)했다. 그러나 범인들은 주민 신고를 받고 출동한(be dispatched to the site upon a resident’s report) 경찰에 의해 현장에서 붙잡혔다(be caught red-handed).
그런데 사건 현장에서 희한한 장면(a strange sight)이 발견됐다. 어항 속 금붕어 세 마리가 모두 ‘독살당해 있는(be poisoned to death)’ 것이었다.
경찰은 범인들로부터 주모자(the ringleader)인 16세 소년이 금붕어들을 죽였다는 자백을 받아냈다(extract a confession).
그런데 그 이유가 황당했다(be preposterous). "저것들이 유일한 목격자(the only witnesses)다. 살려두면 안 된다(can’t let them live)"며 "도망가기 전에 없애버리자(do away with them before we make our getaway)"고 했다는 것이다.
금붕어 세 마리를 몽땅 살해하는(rub out three goldfish in all) 데는 ‘엄청나게 잔인한 방법(a severely cruel method)’이 동원됐다(be mobilized). 어항 속에 겨자, 케첩, 매운 소스와 양념들을 쏟아부은(pour mustard, ketchup, hot sauce and spices in the fish tank) 것이다.
두 소년은 절도 혐의로 기소됐으며(be charged with burglary), 금붕어를 죽인 소년에겐 절도 외에 동물학대(cruelty to animals) 혐의도 적용될 예정이다.
