제설작업을 하는(clear snow from the roads) 데는 흔히 소금, 모래, 염화칼슘이 쓰인다. 그런데 일부 외국에선 소금보다 설탕이 더 효과적이라며 설탕을 길거리에 뿌리고(sprinkle sugar on the roads) 있다.
폭설과 혹한(heavy snowstorms and an intense cold)이 불어닥친 영국의 윌트셔주(州)는 설탕으로 코팅한 모래를 사용하고(use sugar coated grit) 있다. 염화칼슘과 거의 효과가 비슷하면서(be almost as effective as calcium chloride) 차량들에 손상을 주지 않기(do not damage cars) 때문이다.
모래에 설탕을 입히면 좀 더 끈적끈적하게 돼(make it stickier) 일반 소금보다 훨씬 더 도로에 달라붙는(stick to the road much more than ordinary salt) 효과도 있다. 부식성(腐蝕性) 면에서도(in terms of corrosiveness) 소금에 비해 90% 덜 부식되는(be 90 percent less corrosive than salt) 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 소금보다 뿌리는 횟수를 줄여도 도로가 얼지 않게 유지할(keep the roads free of ice) 수 있다.
미국 펜실베이니아주(州)에선 소금과 혼합한 사탕무 시럽으로 얼음과 눈을 녹이고(melt ice and snow with sugar beet syrup mixed in with the salt) 있다. 설탕을 추출하고 남은 시럽은 칼륨과 염화물을 함유하고(contain potassium and chloride) 있어 제설·제빙 효과가 있다.
소금을 사탕무 시럽과 혼합하면 최대 2일에서 3일까지(for up to two to three days) 수명과 효과를 늘릴(extend the life and effectiveness of the salt) 수도 있다. 게다가 훨씬 더 친환경적이다(be a lot more environmentally friendly).
미국 아이오와대학에서도 사탕무 가공 부산물과 소금을 섞어(combine salt with a byproduct from sugar beet processing) 방빙제와 제빙제로 사용하고(make use of it as an anti-icer and de-icer) 있다. 소금은 영하의 기온에선 얼음을 녹이지(melt ice in subzero temperatures) 못하는 데 비해 설탕이나 사탕무 시럽은 보다 낮은 유효온도에서도 효과를 나타낸다(work at a lower effective temperature than salt).

melt ice in subzero temperatures 에서 sub zero가 화씨(Fahrenheit) 0도인가요 아니면 우리가 쓰는 섭씨(Cellcius) 0도를 의미하나요. 화씨 0도 = 섭씨 영하 17.8도로 차이가 많네요.
