태국 정부가 한류 열풍 때문에 엉뚱한 고민에 빠졌다. 태국의 젊은 여성들이 한국 여성들의 패션을 따라하면서 몸에 달라붙는 검은색 바지 레깅스를 즐겨입어 보건상 문제가 생겨나고 있기 때문이다.
태국 보건당국은 8일(현지시각) 성명을 발표, 한국 영향에 따른 검은색 레깅스 패션 열풍(a South Korean-inspired fashion craze for black leggings)이 10대들에게 치명적인 뎅기열에 걸릴 위험을 주고(put teeagers at risk of catching potentially deadly dengue fever) 있다고 경고했다.
판시리 쿨라나트시리 보건부 차관은 “국민들, 특히 10대 젊은이들이 옷을 입는 것에 대해 걱정이 된다(be worried about how people dress, especially teenagers)”며 “뎅기열을 옮기는 모기들(the mosquitoes which transmit the disease)은 어두운 색에 끌리는 성향이 있다(tend to be attracted by dark colors)”고 지적했다.
“뎅기열을 옮기는 모기(dengue-carrying mosquitoes)가 레깅스의 얇은 천을 뚫고 물 수 있어서(can bite through the leggings‘ thin fabric) 레깅스를 입는 사람들은 뎅기열에 걸릴 위험이 더 크다(be at greater risk of being infected with dengue)”는 것이다.
쿨라나트시리 차관은 “따라서 밝은 색깔의 옷을 입는 것이 낫고(be better to wear light colors), 청바지처럼 모기로부터 보호받을 수 있는 바지(pants that can protect against mosquitoes, such as jeens)를 입는 것이 바람직하다”고 말했다.
그는 이어 레깅스를 “한국 패션 현상”이라고 지칭하면서(call the leggings a “Korean fashion phenomenon) ”유행 패션도 좋지만 모기를 끌어들이지 않도록(so as not to attract mosquitoes) 검은색 레깅스 또는 여타 어두운색 옷 입는 것을 피하는(avoid wearing black leggings or any dark colored clothing) 것이 좋다“고 말했다.
태국 정부에 따르면 올들어 7개월 동안(in the first seven months of this year) 43명이 뎅기열로 사망하고 4만5000명 이상이 감염돼 지난해 같은 기간에 비해(compared to the same period last year) 약 40%의 증가율(an increase of about 40%)을 보였다. 발병이 급증하고(have a spike in dengue cases) 있는 것이다.
게다가 감염자들의 대다수는 젊은이들이다. 올해 희생자들 중(of this year’s fatalities) 26명이 10~24세 사이인(be between the ages of 10 and 24) 젊은이들이었다. 이같은 현상이 급기야는 태국 보건당국에게 소녀들과 젊은 여성들이 입는 필수품 패션 아이템의 위험성에 대해 경고하고 나서게 만든(prompt the thai health authorities to warn about the hazards of the must-have fashion item worn by girls and young women) 것이다.
뎅기열은 동남아시아의 풍토적인(be endemic in Southeast Asia) 병으로, 대략 6월부터 9월까지 이어지는(run roughly from June through September) 우기 중에 전형적으로 증가하는(typically rise during the rainy season) 추세를 보인다. 고인 물과 비위생적인 환경(stagnant water and unsanitary environments)이 뎅기열을 옮기는 모기들에게 좋은 번식지를 제공해주기(provide fertile breeding grounds for mosquitoe that transmit the disease) 때문이다.
