공포영화 줄거리처럼 들릴지(may sound like the plot of a horror movie) 모르겠다. 지난 10년간 휴대폰 번호 0888-888-888을 배정받았던 사람들(every single person assigned to the cellphone number 0888-888-888 in the last 10 years)이 모두 숨졌다.
불가리아에서 일어난 일이다. 이에 따라 불가리아 핸드폰업체 모빌텔은 이 번호 배정을 중단(suspend the assignment of the number)했다.
외신들에 따르면 모빌텔의 대변인은 이에 관한 언급을 거부하고(refuse to comment on it) 있다. 개인 휴대폰 번호에 대해 언급하는 것은 부적절하다는(be inappropriate to discuss individual cellphone mumbers) 이유에서다.
그러나 언론들이 그 전화번호의 으스스한 역사를 추적해본(track down the phone number‘s eerie history) 결과, 해당 번호를 가졌던 사람들은 모두 요절한(come to an untimely end) 것으로 밝혀졌다.
첫 번째 소유자(the first owner)는 모빌텔의 전 CEO(the former MobilTel CEO) 블라디미르 그라쉬노프였다. 지난 2001년 48세였던 그는 암으로 세상을 떠났다(die of cancer). 일각에선 사업상 라이벌에 의해 방사능 물질로 독살됐다는(be radioactively poisoned by a business rival) 설이 나돌기도 했다.
이후 문제의 휴대폰 번호는 불가리아 마피아 두목이자 7억7500만달러 규모 마약밀수 제국의 왕(a Bulgarian mafia boss and king of a ＄775 million drug smuggling empire)인 콘스탄틴 디미트로프에게 넘어갔다(be passed on to Konstantin Dimitrov).
그리고 얼마 뒤 그는 네덜란드에서 한 모델과 외식을 하던 중(while eating out with a model in the Netherlands) 암살범의 총을 맞고(be gunned down by an assasin) 즉사했다(be killed on the spot). 지난 2003년, 그의 나이 31세였다. 당시 그의 죽음 배후에는(behind the killing) 그의 마약 밀거래사업을 시기한 러시아 마피아 두목들(Russian mafia bosses, jealous of his drug-smuggling operation)이 있다는 소문이 나돌았다.
세 번째이자 마지막 소유자(the third and final owner)는 낮에는 부동산중개인, 밤에는 마약왕(a real-estate-agent-by-day and a drug-lord-by-night))이었던 콘스탄틴 디쉴리에프였다. 그는 비밀리에 대규모 코카인 밀매집단을 운영하고(secretly run a massive cocaine trafficking ring) 있었다.
그는 지난 2005년 콜롬비아로부터 밀반입하던 2억 달러 상당의 코카인(＄200million of the white stuff on its way in from Colombia)이 경찰 단속에 걸린 뒤(after being intercepted by the police) 불가리아 수도 소피아의 한 레스토랑 밖에서 암살 당했다(be assassinated outside a restaurant in Bulgaria’s capital city Sofia). 3명의 잇단 소유자들(three successive owners)이 모두 의문의 죽음을 당한(die in suspicious circumstances) 것이다.
문제의 번호는 디쉴리에프 죽음에 대한 수사 기간 중 임시 중단됐다가(after being temporarily suspended during the investigation into Dishliev‘s death) 이후 영원히 작동이 중지된 것으로 알려졌다(be said to have been de-activated for good). 지금은 그 번호로 전화를 걸면 ’통화권 밖‘(outside network coverage)이라는 녹음메시지만 들려올(be greeted with a recorded message) 뿐이다.
그렇다면 문제의 번호 소유자들 죽음은 단순한 우연의 일치일까, 아니면 휴대폰 저주의 증거일까(be merely coincidence or proof of a cell phone curse).
모빌텔에게 골치덩어리인 이 번호를 어찌하면 좋을까. 이 번호를 중국의 누구에겐가 팔면(sell the number to someone in China) 아무 걱정없이 이 수익을 올릴(profit off the number) 수 있을 것이다. 중국에선 숫자 8이 행운의 의미로 받아들여지고(be considered lucky) 있기 때문이다.
지난 2003년 중국의 한 항공사는 전화번호 8888-8888을 233만 위안(약 4억3000만원)을 주고 사들인(pay 2.33million yuan for the phone number 8888-8888) 바 있다.
