죽어가는 아내를 살리기 위해(fight to revive his dying wife) 안간힘을 다해 인공호흡을 하던(give a kiss of life with all his strength) 남편이 심부전(心不全)을 일으켜 아내와 함께 사망했다(die from heart failure along with his wife).
영국 타인사이드에 사는 스튜어트 윗필드(56)는 지난 12일(현지시각) 아내인 올가(61)가 주방에 쓰러져 있는 것을 발견(find his wife Olga collapsed in the kitchen)했다. 그는 즉각 999에 전화를 건 뒤 구급차 요원의 인명구조 방법을 들으며(while being talked through life-saving procedures by an ambulance controller) 아내를 소생시키려 필사적인 노력을 기울였다(try desperately to resuscitate her).
하지만 수 분 뒤, 이 헌신적인 남편(the devoted husband)은 구급차 요원의 지시에 응답하지 않았다(stop responding to the instructions). 이내 구급 요원들이 도착했지만, 인기척이 없었다. 편지함으로 들여다보니(peer through the letterbox) 주방 쪽에 2쌍의 다리들(two pairs of legs lying in the kitchen)이 보였다
현관 유리창을 부수고 집으로 뛰어들어간(break into the house smashing a window in the front door) 구급 요원들은 남편이 주방 바닥의 아내 위에 쓰러져 있는 것을 발견(find him slumped over his wife on the kitchen floor)했다. 부부는 남편의 얼굴이 아내의 얼굴을 덮은 채 마지막 포옹을 한(lock in a last embrace with him face down on top of her) 자세를 하고 있었다.
두 사람은 이미 숨져 있었다. 아내인 올가는 급성신장염으로 사망했으며(die from an acute kidney infection), 남편 윗필드는 아내를 되살리려다가 심장마비를 일으켜(succumb to a heart attack) 숨진 것으로 밝혀졌다.
가족들은 부부가 서로에게 너무나 헌신적이었다고(be utterly devoted to each other) 말한다. 함께 있을 때 가장 행복해 했다고(fee happiest when in each other‘s company) 한다.
지난 5월 아내 생일 때(on her birthday last May) 남편 윗필드는 결혼 15년 째인 아내에게 축하카드를 보냈다(send his spouse of 15 years a card). “이 세상에서 제일 좋은 아내인 나의 올가에게(To my Olga, the best wife in the world). 많고 많고 많은 사랑을(loads and loads and loads of love),”
검시 결과(according to the post mortem examinations), 부부는 수 분 차이로 세상을 떠난(pass away within minutes of each other) 것으로 확인됐다.
