한계를 극복하는 즐거움

나카지마 가오루 선생님의 ‘인생에서 중요한 것은 모두 초일류에게 배웠다 ’를 읽고

1960년대 중반 한국의 시골은 초라했다. 토담집에 지붕은 짚으로 엮은 이엉으로 덮고 서까래에 대못을 박고 새끼줄로 잡아매어서 고정했다. 일 년에 한 번씩 가을이면 다시 새로운 이엉으로 지붕을 갈아주어야 했다.

초등학교에 입학해서 ‘자연’시간에 무지개 그림이 나왔고 학생 한명이 뭐라고 하니까 선생님께서 다시 말해보라고 하시면서 훌륭하다고 칭찬해주셨다. 그때 무지개의 색이 ‘빨주노초파남보’라는 것을 알게 되었다. 그때는 학교에 교과서 이외의 책이 좀 있기는 했으나 언제나 유리책장 뒤에 자물쇠로 잠겨 있어서 볼 수가 없었다.

나카지마 가오루 선생님의 어린 시절, 시마네현 이야기가 나오고 다시 하마마쓰에서 연수가 있어서 갔다가 레코드 가게에서 엘톤 존의 ‘Your song’을 듣고 ‘Good-by morning’이라는 곡을 작곡해서 세계가요제에서 그랑프리를 받았다는 내용을 읽으면서 불현듯 나의 어린 시절이 떠올랐다.

타고난 역마살에 떠밀려 여행도 많이 다녔고 타지에서 저녁을 맞이하면 조금이라도 더 보고 경험하고 싶어서 다음날 여행 스케줄에도 불구하고 밤늦게 이국의 거리를 돌아다닌 적도 많았다.

그러나 음반 하나를 계기로 작곡까지 하게 되었다는 저자의 글을 읽으면서 타고난 재능과 불굴의 추진력에 적이 놀라게 된다. 사실 이 책을 열기 전에는 어린 시절부터 성장기까지 삶의 중요한 결정과 진로에 영향을 미쳤고 감동과 교훈을 주셨던 많은 분들이 등장하리라고 짐작하고 있었으나 이 책의 내용은 오히려 사회에 진출한 이후의 일화들로 채워져 있어서 조금은 예상을 빗겨가는 부분이 있었다.

그럼에도 불구하고 사람과 사람의 만남에서 서로에게서 교감하며 배우고 깨닫는 많은 일화들은 매우 인상적이었고 많은 교훈을 얻을 수 있었다.

책을 덮고 난 후에도 오래 여운이 가시지 않는 대표적인 몇 가지만 소개하기로 한다.

벨기에 출신의 플라워 아티스트인 다니엘 오스트를 소개한 ‘아름다움은 권력이다’라는 구절이 매우 인상적이다. 아름다움이 권력인 것은 사실이나 좀 더 넉넉하고 너그러운 여유를 겸비했으면 좋겠다는 생각을 하게 된다.

농구 선수 샤킬 오닐을 소개하면서 구단주인 리치 디보스가 선수들을 격려했다는 “Why not us, why not now?라는 말도 깊은 충격으로 다가온다. ‘우린 이길 것이고 바로 오늘 이길 것’이라는 투지가 감동적이다.

제니퍼 로페즈를 소개하면서 뛰어난 사람일수록 ‘아무리 칭찬하고 띄워줘도 절대 잘난 척 한다거나 무례하게 행동하지 않는다는 구절도 깊이 음미할 가치가 있는 교훈이라고 생각한다.

저자는 감각을 무척 중요시 한다고 한다. 어떤 분야에서건 감각적인 사람은 인생을 즐길 줄 안다는 저자의 주장에 수긍한다.

뛰어난 사람들은 순간적으로 사물이나 현상의 본질을 꿰뚫어 중요한 일을 판단하고 선택하는 능력이 있다는 설명도 공감이 가는 내용이다.

작가인 모리 요코의 ‘일에서 프로가 되는 방법은 아주 간단하다. 약속을 지키고 절대 대충 일하지 않는 것!’이라는 글도 아주 깔끔한 표현이다.

와이너리 CEO인 데이비드 피어슨의 “오퍼스원을 생산할 때는 시(時)와 지(地)를 매우 고집스럽게 관리하는데 ‘시’란 계절을 겪으면서 포도 열매가 맺히고 성숙해가는 과정을 의미하며 지는 포도에 독특한 개성을 부여하는 요소로서 지형과 지질, 기후를 뜻한다고 한다.

스페인 테니스 선수 카를로스 모야를 소개하면서 ‘You can do it’과 ‘I will show you’라는 저자의 사업에 대한 지도 방식을 설명하고 있는데 ‘내가 먼저 해볼테니 그대로 따라하면 당신도 할 수 있다’는 솔선수범하는 자세는 배울 필요가 있다고 생각한다.

미국의 테니스 선수 안드레 애거시의 ‘연습하지 않는 사람은 우승할 자격이 없다’는 일침도 마음에 새겨둘만한 경구라고 생각한다.

끝으로 아테네 올림픽에 출전한 일본의 체조 선수에게 주었다는 ‘5개의 메시지’도 참으로 훌륭한 조언이라고 생각한다.

    1. Hi, how are you? It’s too sorry. I don’t use smart phone for web, and I use only Desktop, so firewall and virus is checked always. Window and vaccine update is very important. Bye Now.

I ain’t saying your information isn’t solid., but what if you added a headline that grabbed folk’s attention? I mean BLOG_TITLE is a little vanilla. You ought to look at Yahoo’s front page and note how they create news titles to grab people to open the links. You might add a video or a related picture or two to get people interested about what you’ve written. In my opinion, it would make your posts a little livelier.|
